Hello and thank you for your interest in helping Japan recover.
I am Eriko Tamura and I'm from one of the affected areas next to Fukushima, where the nuclear reactor is leaking radiation. My father's house was severely damaged by the massive quake that struck Japan on March 11th and for three long and agonizing days, I did not even know if either of my parents had survived. All of the phone lines were down and because I now reside in the US, I was unable to immediately rush to their side to secure their safety.
When I finally reached both of them, I was so relieved, but I soon learned the full scale of the hardships that people in the affected areas are facing. Even now, after several weeks, there still is no running water available. People must walk to an emergency evacuation center at a school that is far away. Using the pool's water for their toilet, they wait 5 hours to receive only 3 liters of drinking water, which must be carried home since there is no gasoline to power motor vehicles. Everyone is forced to walk very long distances and for an elderly person, this is a severe hardship. And on top of all of these difficulties, many are now facing the threat of radiation poisoning.
I want to do anything and everything possible to make it so the Japanese people will be able to go back to the life they had before this catastrophe. I am the kind of woman who believes that there is always a way, but the situation our friends and family members in Japan are facing is dire. The people in the affected areas are worried their lives will never return to normal. They are exhausted physically and emotionally. They feel abandoned and are afraid right now, but I want them to feel that there are many people who care about them and support them in their struggle.
It feels to me that little by little, people are getting used to hearing the news of this catastrophe. I decided to form this Non Profit Foundation to raise awareness and help Japan heal and rebuild. This tragedy affects us all and I am determined to do whatever I can do ease the suffering of those people in the affected areas.
I hope you will join me. Together, let's let the people in the devastated areas know that there are many people around the world who care about them. This whole movement started because I wanted to help my parents. I am an actress, but I am doing this as a daughter, as a woman, as one human being reaching out to another. I want the survivors of this disaster to know that help is on the way.
